The Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI™) is the world’s leading thinking styles assessment tool. It identifies your preferred approach to emotional, analytical, structural, and strategic thinking. The HBDI™ assessment tool can be used in 10 different languages (Danish, German, Dutch, English, French, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Swedish).
THE GENESIS OF THE WHOLE BRAIN MODEL
In 1976, while researching the brain as the source of creativity, Ned Herrmann learned of the pioneering brain research of Roger Sperry, Paul MacLean, Joseph Bogen and Michael Gazzaniga. From their work it is clear that the brain has four distinct and specialized structures.
Inspired by this research, Herrmann worked with EEG scans and, later, paper-and-pencil questionnaires to identify four distinct types of thinking, each roughly corresponding to one of the brain structures. The result of this research is the Herrmann Whole Brain Model.
In August, 1979, after many tests, in-depth research, and mountains of data, Herrmann had developed a valid self-assessment that enables individuals to understand their own thinking style preferences—the HBDI™ (Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument.).
Once an individual understands his or her thinking style preferences, the door is open to improved communication, leadership, management, problem solving, decision making and other aspects of personal and interpersonal development.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The HBDI™ is a 120-question diagnostic survey. Your answers indicate your thinking style preferences. Because it is a self-analysis, most people immediately recognize their results as accurate.
WHAT DO I GET FROM THIS?
Your personal thinking preferences influence your communication, decision-making, problem solving, and management styles. Understanding your thinking style preferences gives you a new perspective of yourself and others you interact with everyday.

THE HBDI™ IS NOT JUST ANOTHER ASSESSMENT TOOL
Ned Herrmann began developing the HBDI™ in the 1970s. Twenty years of research and innovation stand behind the validity of the HBDI™. It has been the subject of independent validations, dissertations, and scientific papers. A summary of HBDI™ validations can be found in Ned Herrmann’s book, The Creative Brain. Numerous case studies illustrate a wide range of applications of the HBDI™.
The HBDI™ picks up where other assessment tools leave off. Where most assessments end with a single report, the HBDI™ offers a valuable range of applications. Identifying our thinking style preferences is only the first step.
YOU CAN APPLY HBDI™ TECHNOLOGY TO INCREASE YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF:
